Herta von Stiegel
Board Member

Herta established Ariya Capital in 2008 to focus on Africa as the next major opportunity for sustainable venture and private equity investments. She has 25 years of experience in international finance with a consistent track record of building profitable highly regulated structured finance businesses and has led/ executed debt and equity transactions in excess of $10 billion. She was Managing Director at AIG Financial Products, where she built a successful European structured finance division, and has also held senior positions at Citibank and JP Morgan in London and New York. She has specific expertise in finance, clean and renewable energy and risk management. As the founder and Executive Chair of Ariya Capital Group, Herta leads the firm in its three mutually reinforcing business divisions: (i) energy finance; (ii) clean energy independent power producer; and (iii) asset management.

A tax lawyer by training, she serves on several corporate and non-profit boards, including as a member of the Supervisory Board of LeasePlan Corporation N.V., the leading global fleet management company with activities in 32 countries. From 2006 to 2012, she served on the board of Camco International, a publicly listed global clean energy developer with significant operations in China, the US and Africa, where she chaired the audit committee and served on the remuneration and nominations committees.

Herta holds a Juris Doctor degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Michigan, a Masters of Law degree in Taxation from New York University School of Law, a B.A. and Doctorate of Humane Letters (honoris causa) from Andrews University and completed the Executive Programme in Corporate Finance at the London Business School. Born and raised in emerging markets, Herta has committed this phase of her career to developing the power sector in Africa as a key engine for growth and poverty alleviation.

Born in Transylvania, Herta has lived and worked in numerous developed and emerging markets, is a citizen of the United States and the United Kingdom, bilingual in English and German and fluent in Romanian. She currently resides with her husband in Nairobi, Kenya.

Hans von Stiegel
Finance and Administration

Hans von Stiegel has over 25 years’ experience in finance, risk management and information technology. A trained accountant and former banker, he worked for Citibank and Manufacturers Hannover in London and New York where he focused on risk management and management information systems. He designed and implemented credit control systems, industry specific cash flow and valuation models and standardized methodologies across the corporate banking groups.

Prior to his banking career, he was Financial Controller for several medium sized automotive supply companies, where he was responsible for the entire range of accounting, taxation and finance functions. Hans has an MBA from London Business School and a Bachelor of Science. from Andrews University, Michigan. He serves on several boards and finance committees, including as a director of Ariya Capital Kenya Limited. Born in Detroit, he is a citizen of the Unites States and the United Kingdom and has Permanent Resident status in Kenya.

Jenny Fletcher
Board Member

Jenny has over 25 years’ experience in the power sector and international finance, building a wide range of successful businesses in the profit and non-profit sectors in Africa, Europe, America and Asia. She spearheaded the development of the first utility scale wind farm in East Africa and has developed and implemented a number of projects in the energy sector including solar, wind and gas. Jenny was nominated as “Outstanding Woman in Power” in East Africa in 2015 and was also named as one of the top 60 most influential figures in East and West African power in 2014.
Previous experience included managing budgets of over $300m across 32 countries and realized debt/ equity financing for projects over $300m. As a Director in Ethiopia and as the Country Representative of IRC in Kenya, she successfully oversaw the design and delivery of many development projects across Central and East Africa, including large-scale town water distribution systems and the design and rollout of health delivery systems in the areas of primary healthcare, water and sanitation and HIV/AIDS.
Born in Kenya, and educated in Australia and the UK, Jenny is a chartered accountant and has an MSc from the London School of Economics and Political Science. She currently resides in Nairobi, Kenya, and has lived and worked in numerous developed and emerging markets, including Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, the USA and the UK.

Gordon Power
Board Member

Gordon Power is the co-founder of Earth Capital Holdings with Stephen Lansdown and the Chief Investment Officer of Earth Capital Partners. In addition, Gordon is also a Director & Investment Committee member at Berkeley Energy Ltd (BEL) and Director of Sustainable Development Capital Ltd. Gordon has over 35 years of private equity experience.

He founded the private equity business ProVen Private Equity (now re-named Beringea) and led its buy-out from Guinness Mahon in 1997 acting as CEO and CIO until the firm’s sale in 2004. In 2003 ProVen had funds under management of $340m.

Gordon’s investment track record extends to over 256 investments made over the last 35 years, generating an IRR of 28.5%.

Jo Gorrod
Board Member

Jo Gorrod has over 20 years of experience working in the financial services sector in Jersey. Jo’s principal area of focus has always been in the private client arena managing complex structures for high-net-worth international families. Jo has extensive experience working with UK residents and non-domiciled individuals, having previously headed up a team specialising in this area. Jo also has significant experience in managing high-value commercial and residential property structures.

Jo has an honours degree in English from the University of Manchester and has been a member of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries since 1999. Jo was shortlisted for Woman of the Year in the Citywealth Magic Circle Awards 2018.

Michael Farrow
Advisory Board

Michael Farrow was a founding director of a mid-sized Jersey-regulated trust company which was sold successfully in 2016. He is now a director of a number of UK and Irish listed, and substantial private, companies involved in real estate, clean energy and quoted assets.
For seven years before this, he was an executive director and trustee of a large and complex family structure. As such he held over thirty directorships in a number of jurisdictions. He managed the family office, which acted as the head office to an international property group. He has also been group company secretary of Cater Allen, Jersey, now part of Santander.
Michael holds an MSc in Corporate Governance and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries & Administrators.

Bernd Schanzenbacher
Advisory Board

Bernd is an agronomist and an acknowledged leader in sustainability and socially responsible investments with over 20 years of experience in financial markets, business practices, and international public policy. Prior to EBG Capital, Bernd was Global Co-Head of Credit Suisse’s Environmental Business Group where he led the implementation of the overall strategy and execution of the Environmental Business Group’s cleantech and natural resource investment strategies. Bernd played a key role in securing Credit Suisse’s mandate for the Masdar Clean Tech Fund with Abu Dhabi and Siemens.

Until 2007, Bernd was Credit Suisse’s Global Head of Sustainability Affairs. He contributed as a Lead Author to the Chapter on “Impacts of Climate Change on Financial Services” of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Third Assessment Report. IPCC won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. Prior to joining Credit Suisse Group in 1998, Bernd was the Economic Affairs Officer with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Nairobi, Kenya and in Geneva, Switzerland. Bernd holds a Master in Agronomy (Dipl-ing. agr.) and a PhD in Agricultural and Resource Economics from the University of Hohenheim in Germany.

Paolo Pietrogrande
Advisory Board

Paolo Pietrogrande is currently Managing Partner, Netplan Management Consulting, LLC, a US based company that implements radical corporate change, restructuring and repositioning of large organizations. Paolo is a member of the Boards of Directors of MAPs Group S.p.A. (stock listed big-data management), Bioenergia Guarcino (power generation, Group Neodecortech), Società Gasdotti Italia (former Edison, natural gas transportation infrastructure), Rubicon Bidco (100% owned by Ontario Teachers Pension Plan) and of Edera Impresa Sociale (R&D civil engineering), where he serves as Chairman.
A chemical engineer by training, he holds a doctorate in Chemical Engineering from the University of Rome and has received management training at the California Institute of Technology, Insead and the GE Learning Center in Crottonville. Paolo Pietrogrande has held positions as CEO in companies including Enel Green Power, 9REN/Gamesa Solar (European energy contractor, Spain), Element Power Solar (global power developer, Oregon), SoloPower (Semiconductors, Silicon Valley), Nuovi Cantieri Apuania (commercial shipbuilding, Italy), CISE (R&D), GOVECS (electric vehicles, Bavaria), Atmos Holding (Clean Tech Venture Capital, Italy), Solar Energy Italia, and Vice President of CHI Energy (energy, Connecticut) and EGI (energy, Latin America).
He has held executive positions at General Electric Power Systems Division, Bain & Company and Kinetics Technology International BV. At KTI, he began his professional career as a junior process engineer in the R&D division in California in 1981.
